Carbon Capture & Sequestration (CCS)

Carbon capture and storage or carbon capture and sequestration is the process of capturing carbon dioxide before it enters the atmosphere, transporting it, and storing it for centuries or millennia.

Carbon Offsets

Utilizing carbon offsets is an excellent way to decrease your carbon footprint directly while making the appropriate changes to your everyday behaviors and choices to conserve energy. Offset projects cover a wide range of initiatives that actively conserve forests, wetlands, grasslands, and other biomes. All of these ecosystems actively store carbon dioxide which in turn can reduce emissions from sources like landfills, farms, and coal mines.

Terrapass, Native Energy, Green E, and Cool Effect, are all third-party sellers that one can purchase plane tickets with the opportunity to buy carbon credits to offset your flight emissions. These websites offer calculators to estimate the amount you need to neutralize the footprint of your trip. Since carbon offsets have taken off in this past decade, there have been many projects that lacked authenticity that ultimately scammed people.  We have compiled respectable companies that are the leaders of innovative change to capture carbon. Check them out!

Carbon offsets are not the one-stop shop for making you feel you are now absolved from making any real changes to your carbon footprint. Carbon offsets should be used as a tool to help offset your carbon footprint, while we all actively work to make some lifestyle changes to be gentler on our environment. If no companies, industries, or individuals choose to opt-out from making real strides toward reducing their carbon emissions and choose to just buy carbon offsets, there will be no change and we will remain in the same conundrum we are in. Industries can emit carbon emissions at a more rapid pace than carbon can be captured and sequestered. That being said, carbon offsets should not be looked to as a replacement for reducing all of your emissions.
